Researcher Mac Tonnies Dies at 34

With the sad passing of prolific blogger, Fortean researcher and futurist Mac Tonnies, we take a trip back to May of 2008 when I had the opportunity to interview Mac regarding a variety of subjects. I was always impressed by his intellect and responses, as well as his personable, down to earth nature. I found Mac to be an inspiring figure with some very unique viewpoints, so I share with you our discussion and the hopes that you'll visit his exellent blog http://posthumanblues.blogspot.com/ to help keep his memory and research alive for a long time to come. -MAD: Mac, it’s terrific to speak with you as I’ve been a fan of your mind expanding blog POSTHUMAN BLUES for awhile now, so thanks for taking the time. The site has been updated, almost daily for 5 years now, covering a wide variety of subjects (mostly related to different areas of Science, UFOlogy, or futurism). Why did you decide to dedicate yourself to such material, what keeps you inspired, and how did your interest in these subjects initially begin?

-MAC: I never consciously decided what subjects I would cover; Posthuman Blues began as an experiment, as I didn't really know if I’d take to blogging or not. Specifically, I didn't think my life was interesting enough to warrant a Web presence -- and, frankly, it probably isn't. But I quickly found myself using Posthuman Blues as a holding pen for ideas. I even wrote a portion of my Mars book online. Five years later, it's kind of fun to look back on. It's taken on a double-role as diary and time capsule.

On 13 November 1984, a Soviet missile was launched from Kapustin Yar, east of Stalingrad. About forty minutes later an R-36M intercontinental ballistic missile blasted off from an underground silo in Kazakhstan. Known to Western intelligence experts as the SS-18 Satan missile, it was capable of carrying either a single 24-megaton warhead or eight independently targeted 600-kiloton warheads. The bomb that killed some 200,000 people at Hiroshima was just 12 kilotons.
