I’ll be the first to admit that I can be a bit of a pessimist sometimes (heck, my last article was a report on the Bubonic Plague), and with the state of the economy, endless wars and controlled opposition presidential elections it’s easy to understand why sarcasm and cynicism rule the day. However, while I’ve gotten into many heated debates through the years in disagreement over specific cause and purpose, I’ve rarely questioned the veracity in the existence of “God” or at least a spiritual realm which transcends our five sense reality. I’ve long come to understand that religion, while each creed has some merit, is ultimately an oppressive form of mind control over human consciousness and destiny, with flawed gurus and authority figures constantly asking for money and charitable donations so that your soul can be saved. Greetings and welcome to this Sunday Spectacle which is the weekly ‘Myths from the Vault’. Keeping to my word that we wouldn’t merely be discussing ghostly entities and interdimensional monsters here, today I wanted to further breach out into the vast realms of mysticism and religion, in particular the “mystery traditions” which don’t currently have a church on every street corner (across from the liquor store and gun shop). A complex and often confusing topic, merely because information isn’t as widely available as with most organized religions, our next edition takes us to the science and philosophies of ancient Greece and the birth of a religion which would shake the world to its very core.

1:1 - In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
1:2 - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
1:3 - And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
1:4 - And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

The above passage is undoubtedly one of the most memorable and universal grouping of words ever to be assembled. For millennia we have given a special precedence to “light” as being the epitome of goodness, of “God”, of the creative source - ever opposed to darkness and the forces of evil. It is the representation of Gilgamesh fighting Humbaba, Horus in eternal battle with his brother Set, the light of Jesus battling the dark influence of Satanic forces (or the “Luciferian” principle, in which Lucifer is masked in light, albeit a counterfeit version according to Christian traditions). Yet, after five-thousand years of using this analogy for the purposes of spiritual enlightenment and wisdom, how many people truly understand the scientific mechanisms behind light itself, what makes it work, and why it’s so important? Just how important is it? After all, without the entwining darkness to counterbalance the radiance, we would all be blinded by the sheer luster of an all encompassing void.

What are dreams? Are they simply the result of the subconscious mind processing all the information that the brain had stored for the day or days? Or is it more than that? These are some of the questions that are repeatedly asked but few have satisfactorily answered.
